Incomplete: "The Self Portrait of A.J. Limited"

Addressed to: Everyone
How many times are you alone, really,
Really, truly, hopelessly, alone?
And how many times are you smiling?
Really, truly, hopefully, smiling --
But not just smiling, happy too.
Or are you more happy alone, really,
Really, truly, ultimately... alone.
Would you part your lips to bring forth noise?
Or does the cricket chirp soothe your urges?
And with the window closed does the draft come in?
Do you pace around a single, brown chair?
I watch the shadows on the wall, wondering
Where they spawn, where they fall, along such white walls.
Count the numbers over again, questioning,
Questioning my mind, my action, myself.
And there the clock does tick, and tock away,
Tick, tock, tick -- tick -- tick -- tick -- tick, tock, tick, tick.
There is time to think it over, and play it
Out perfect. Time again, again to review
A thousand thousand post reviews and more.
More time to see and time to do, time for me
And time for you. Time for us, time for two.
Would you be the one to break the silence?
Or will we need more time to think it out?
And now the door's open, will you close it?
Do we wander back and forth between a book?
I watch the shadows on the wall, wondering
Where they spawn, where they fall, along such white walls.
