For My Mentor

To look in your eyes, and not see the man,
With fire in his eyes, and blood on his hands,
Strength for his spirit and a wandering soul,
That craves the earth's kiss, and envelops her whole.

To look in you eyes, and see past the man,
To find the small child with the trembling hands,
He's huddled and shaking, crying, he's bleeding,
He's blinding his mind and numbing the feeling.

She looked to his eyes, she searched for the man,
She begged and she cried, and she reached for his hand,
She spoke with his heart and it's hushed hopeless song,
Which broke the soft woman he'd guided along.

I look to your eyes and remember the man,
That asked me to follow his path through the lands,
Through slow steady tears, I'll bid him goodbye,
And watch memory's slow dance,
With the stars,
In the sky.
