The forest leaves were hushed and still,
He lurked on silent feet,
Watching for furry tail or bill,
With honey soft and sweet.
In a blur from the south it ran,
Ears and eyes both alert,
Held in its heart a fear of men,
A fear of getting hurt.
With soothing voice he calmed its fears,
Its hate began to end.
At last it took the gift, drew near,
And man had a new friend.

Penned by my hand on the 14th of Ios, in the year 83 MA.
