Rag Doll

Addressed to: Everyone
There she sits betwixt the glass
And before the showcase wall
Ever quietly she waits there
That minute rag doll.
Cotton body, woven dress,
And a stitched face is all
That there is to see
On the simple rag doll.
Mothers send daughters there to look,
But they find nothing at all.
All alone behind the glass
Is the plain rag doll.
So at night she waits there lonely
There in her glassy hall
The darkness seeps around her,
The unfortunate rag doll.
She fights against the terror,
Tries to ignore the tempting call
Yet still it overcomes her.
She is only a rag doll.
Again the new-day shoppers
Bring their daughters small
They say she once walked among us
Now she's just a rag doll.
They see unchanging features
The button eyes so round and small
And think that she feels nothing
That inanimate rag doll.
Her stitched-on mouth does not move;
It can't ask for help at all.
She's reduced to mutely entreating
That someone help her, the rag doll.
There she sits betwixt the glass
And before the showcase wall
Ever quietly she waits there
That minute rag doll.
