A goodbye poem

I don't know how to say goodbye...
For decades past I have tried
I should hate you, you left me without a trace,
And empty void in my life that can never be replaced.
I still remember, we met in Djeir,
My mentor used to take me and leave me there.
Wandering about, learning where to go,
I saw a beast wreathed in shadow
A ghost in the dark with an aura of mystere
A soul in limbo, filled with despair.
We shared that night what could never be unshared,
And when it was finished, you bade me not to care.
Yet gave me a ring, a gift from a friend,
To wear on my finger till its end.
Should it decay on your finger, I'll know...
Know this, my love, I've never let go...

Because I don't know how to say goodbye...
It's been so long and still I cry
In the bed where our intimacies took place
Remembering the solitude of your embrace
Together in bliss, then suddenly you were gone.
I waited for you for so very long
And when you returned, you asked me to leap
To wed you on the spot, and I agreed.
At last your wife, it was such bliss,
But all the joy was so short-lived.
On our wedding night, there was no place
To think that would be the last time I'd see your face.
I wanted to spend our lives together,
But things got worse while I waited to get better.
Nurturing myself on fading memories,
My life blowing past me in a breeze...

I didn't know how to say goodbye...
The the days are past and the time is nigh.
The ring that you gave me on our first night
Will soon have decayed, and be out of sight.
My faithfulness to you has been unshaking
Despite all the years you left me waiting.
I've thought of you each day as I woke
And tried to mend the heart you broke.
You're not coming back, that I know,
And the time is long past to let you go.
As this ring leaves my finger, so you leave my heart,
And I pick myself up for a fresh new start.
I'll always carry with me the lessons I've learned
But a new sun rises and a fresh page is turned.
I'll remember you till the day I die,
But now, my love, I say goodbye...

Penned by my hand on the 12th of Haernos, in the year 149 MA.
